url is dealt with in module (datalayer and BCL) as well as URL control (part of DNN core framework). I am not sure, which of these components add length restrictions.

This might be something that would be nice to have a setting for in Host Settings. Something where it still requires a manual change on the DB but can be set for the code to check on BCL.

a workaround to these long urls would be to use a url shortening servicea, such as tinyurl.com. Your very long url would be changed into this by tinyurl: http://tinyurl.com/djzgda
