Hi:

Being new to the portal concept, I would like to know the differences between creating a sub-portal or creating just a new page from your existing portal. I mean can someone succinctly list the advantages of having sub-portals rather than just creating new pages.

FYI I envisage having many subdomains with a high degree of independence for each city for my site because its an activist movement. Would having sub-portals make more sense than just giving certain users permissions over certain pages based on which city they live in?

Regards,

Salman

Well, not knowing exactly what you are doing, I would say this:

1) If you were going to register users, their information would be separate by sub-portal (so, for example, baltimore.activism.org vs philadelphia.activism.org would have different members).  The advantage is that reporting would not require modifications to core modules to identify where they are registered.

2) Easier to manage if the differences between the cities woul be substantial in presentation or functionality.

3) Easier to split off if that were an issue.

Thanx alot Goldwater for your info......

so, does that mean that a person who signs in from the main portal will have to sign-in again into the sub-portal? I am sure there's some way to synchronize members from different sub-portals with the main portal?

Also, would having many sub-portals require more than one database, or can you work with just one MSSQL database for all subportals?

Thanks alot for any help,

Salman
