I have dnn installed on a subdirectory, like www.mysite.com/dnn, with login link on every page.  What i want to accomplish is,

1: i want users to go to www.mysite.com and be able to view the website, instead of going to www.mysite.com/dnn.

2: i don't want a login link to show on www.mysite.com.  regular visitors will go to www.mysite.com and view the site w/o having to log in, but administrator will go to www.mysite.com/dnn and login to make any changes.

the site is currently hosted on GoDaddy.com.

i've tried to figure this out by googling, but the more i read, the more confused i get.  please help this poor newbie.  any help would be greatly appreciated.

ad 1) either install DotNetNuke in the web site root, or provide a forwarding page to /dnn/default.aspx

ad 2) instead of removing the login link, I would modify the skin to place it at the bottom of the page, using a lower contrast with the background like light grey on white. If you, however, completely remove the control, admins can enter the site by using "/dnn/default.aspx?ctl=login".

For #1, moving the site to the root will certainly work but a much easier option is to just use the HOSTHEADER setting in your WEB.CONFIG file.  This is a common solution for sites running on a shared hosting provider -- especially when using a host's "auto-install" feature to create a DNN site.  Note that this is a good option only if you are running a single portal on the DNN instance.

Check the section "Tip #1" at this link for details on using HOSTHEADER setting to get rid of the subfolder name in your URL:

GoDaddy hosting:  If you use GoDaddy as your hosting provider (with Deluxe hosting or better) then there is an additional step needed to make this work.  I'll have that posted in a day or so.

Redirection page:  If it applies to your situation, use of the HOSTHEADER setting is better than a redirection page.  Using a redirection page to redirect visitors from a base URL to a subfolder URL will mess up your "referring sites / referring pages" web stats and could also negatively impact SEO (search rankings).

Well....a month late is better than never, I suppose...

Here's the promised post with specific instructions on using GoDaddy's DNN auto-install feature with the config changes needed to get rid of the subfolder name in the URL.  This is a much easier route than installing to the root or moving an installation to the root (which I dida number of times the past few years before figuring out the needed GoDaddy config changes to kill the subfolder from the URL):
