...even if this was possible, surely I would still have the DOWLOAD button still visible on the page for the user to click on - and this may confuse them if there is nothing there.

possibly best if I upload a simple PDF with each article which users see if they do happen to click on download (and this way they won't get a critical error message for trying to click on download when there is nothing there).

 I'm not sure I completely understand the behavior you are looking for. Can you describe exactly what you are looking for the form/field to do? You want an 'optional' file upload, but if there is no file uploaded, you want the download button to not be displayed? is that correct?  If there is a file uploaded, then you want the download button displayed?   Is that what you are trying to accomplish?

yes, that was the idea.

If file uploaded display download button.

if NO file uploaded - DONT display button.

but it's not that important - I can live without it.
