I was at ver 4.6. 2  and upgraded to 5.0.01 ..  Ok, that was a mistake, so I re-installed my backup to ver. 4. 6    The site won't run.  I ran the install.aspx  and it says it's installed correctly and that my assembly version is 4.6.02 and my database version is 5.0.01.   I suspect that's a problem ?     I 'thought' the service provider keeps backups, but apprently not on MS2005 and if they did, it's too late to restore it now. (I did do a remote backup and download using some freebie s/w, but I haven't tried to import it)    Did 5.0.01  do something to the database ?  And is there a way I can un-do it?  Start over ?    Thanks

Most upgrades to modules and the DNN itself will make changes to the database.  There isn't any easy way to undo those changes, without just restoring a database backup.  Unfortunately, it sounds like your best options are to 1) try to restore that remote backup, and if that doesn't work 2) stay with 5.0.1 or 3) start over.

Hope that helps,

Ok, that's what I was thinking, so this morning I upgraded my insallation back to 5.0.01.  When I triggered the install, the page went blank and stayed that way.  After four or five minutes, I went to the web page and the first page was there but I couldn't sign in.  Searching thru the previous qeustions/answeres seemed to indicate I wasn't connecting to the database and I indeed found a typo in my DB user ID in the web.config.  I corrected that and triggered the install and got an error message that the database connection string can't conect to the database named.    I went to my ISP and logged in anc checked the database connections .  I see this listed :    (@setUID) select * from users where uid = @set UID     There seems to be another connection (didn't write it down) that's also sleeping.  There is a warning that if I delete these connections I might lose all my data.     As an engineer, I tend to push the buttons to see what happens.  That's how I got into this mess so I'm getting a little reluctiant  to do much more. Any suggestions ???

Update.... I re-installed my old web.config and the site comes up.  Now the problem is that I can't log on as either host or admin.    I had deleted my 'normal' login name trying to figure out why the site wasn't letting new members register.   I've gone thru all the 'public' menus and they work fine.   Now I need to get into the members area by loggin in.   Any one with ideas to try?

It may be that the encryption keys used for the passwords changed when you switched web.configs.  I would suggest registering a new user, and then copying that user's password information on top of the host user.  Then you can use that password, login, and then change the host & admin passwords to a known value.

The passwords are stored in the aspnet_Membership table.  You can look up the username in the aspnet_Users table, and then use the UserID to find the same record in the _Membership table.  Make sure you update both the Password and PasswordSalt columns.

Hope that helps,
