Can anyone provide the most reliable (and easy?) steps to upgrade a legacy site on DNN 2.1.2  to the latest 4.9.3 .  The site has a few thoousand users and a handful of 3rd party modules and years of content.   Should I upgrade to a version of 3 and then to a version of 4, etc., or are there some specific versions I need to upgrade to ?

TIA

Yes, upgrade in stages.

Upgrade 2.1.2 to a version that has a parallel 3.x version.  Then upgrade to that 3.x.

Do the same thing to get from 3.x to 4.x.

Upgrade to 4.6.2.  You can then upgrade 4.9.3 easily.

Make backups of your database and web directory at every stage.  Then, test each upgrade to make sure that modules continue to work.  If you find a problem, stop and fix it.

Just been doing it for my clients -

from 2.1.2 update to 3.1.1 - this will take your users across

then 3.1.1 to 3.5

then 3.5 to 3.7

this will work and you should not lose any users - missing the first step seems to drop the users

from 3.7 update to low version of 4 then 4.6 then 4.9

Sorry, but the latest DNN 3 version has been 3.3.7

my suggested upgrade path is: 2.1.2 - 3.1.1 - 4.0.3 - 4.3.7 - 4.4.1 - 4.6.2 - 4.9.3

missed the .3. by that much

I tried some clients 3.1.1 to 3.3.7 but some gave problems some did not - stopping off at 3.3.5 seemed to fix the problems.
