Is there a common DotNetNuke function to add a message or error box to a page within my module, for example after a user has successfully inserted a new item into the database or some exception was caught? As all the DotNetNuke error boxes look the same I am wondering if there is something provided by the framework like DotNetNuke.Commons.etc

I believe you are talking about the Green, Yellow or Red messages that show up at various times.  Those are "ModuleMessages".  They are accessed by.

DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.Skin.AddModuleMessage(...

I believe that is the right namespace, (I don't have DNN on this machine, but it is either as I have it, or DotNetNuke.Skins....
