Yes, indeed, Timo's transparency sample also looks quite nice. Actually, I mentioned PNG8 support in my first post, but I usually dismiss it because it's "too little, too late". With gradient fills, PNG8 looks abysmal. But, you could of course merge the STYLES control technique and use PNG8 instead of JPEGs. I would hate for anyone to give up PNG32 just so things "work" in IE6.

If you create your png8 files in Fireworks, you will have real alpha transparency in all browsers but IE6.

IMO it's really stupid you still cannot create them in Photoshop CS4 BTW..

I have been working on the PNG issue for a few days now and just found a good solution that will allow you to use PNG-24 in DNN 5

1. Download the PngFix.htc file and blankimage.gif from http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/

2. Allow .htc extensions

3. In your main layout page insert

<style type="text/css">
    img, div { behavior: url(<%= SkinPath %>iedpngfix.htc) }
</style>

4. In the HTC file you need to change the blankImg path to

var blankImg = '/Portals/_default/Skins/<Skin Name Here>/images/blank.gif';

This works for all images that are either an img or a background of a div. You can also add more classes or ids to the style.

In my experience all these PNG hacks are really slow if you have a lot of images on your site

I second Timo's opinion about PNG hacks. I've used them before and they're not reliable. Be cautious, they might produce issues with CSS position, slow down site's performance...
