Can anyone tell me if there is a module that can handle reservations and payments for a a client who has a car hire business?

I would suggest posting questions regarding this at ddnsoft.com.  I believe CataLook may be suitable for this kind of thing.

Thanks... I have mailed catalook but not had a reply :-(

Doesn't fill you with confidence does it? Any other suggestions at all please??

I had a copy of Catalook about a year ago and can confirm it can do hire (and tickets).
 There used to be a trial version - the documentation was not so good but is was available.
 Nina Meiers has a site dedicated to catalook support. http://www.catalooksupport.com/CatalookManual/tabid/37/Default.aspx
 My experience with support was not the fastest but it was quite good.
