Hi,

I got a message from my host wh4l saying my db is causing an overload on the server. (see message below) The sites are down so I can't acces them to check what is going on and WH4L is asking me to check the coding which is not much help to me,

I'd be grateful for any ideas how to fix this.

Dear customer,
There are a large amount of connection connect to your Database '"mydatabase", and your Database over load the server resources. This cause a critical issue on the server. It is most likely caused by the web application/site code which does not close connection after using it. Please try to fix your coding to prevent the overloading on the server.

Thanks in advance

Leif

which modules did you install?

ask the provider for log files to identify the issue. Did you frequently check size of database transaction log and tables SiteLog, Eventlog, schedulerhistory and searchitemwords?

Hi Sebastian,

I didn't install any new modules.

The database is massive 450 MB but I'm having a hard time accessing it in order to clean it.

I'll try to restore it locally and fix it from there.

All suggestions welcome and appreciated

Thanks in advance

Leif

Leif,

my suggestions:

  • make sure, transaction log (if enabled) is truncated frequently
  • truncate tables mentioned before (including all search tables)
  • in Host Settings enable heavy caching
  • shorten time to keep site log or use filebased sitelog (if you are able to analyse data externally)

WH4L sent me the same thing about a month ago for a non-DNN application that's been running on their server for approximately 3 years.  My code has NOT changed and the commands to close the connection are in place.

I opened a support ticket and asked them if they've rebooted their SQL server, since there didn't appear to be any problems on my end.  (I administer some web servers and SQL servers at work and I know that glitches do occur.)
