Hello Members;

I would like to:

  •  introduce myself
  • get some design advice and considerations from experienced Forum developers

Intro:

My name is James Dennis and am new to DNN and a  computer science student at Purdue Univeristy At Indianapolis.  Most of the projects I have done have not been with a content management system, usually pure code on my part.  I have just installed DNN and am excited to learn its interface and capabilities.

Considerations:

  • Environment:  Currently, I am working for a helpdesk team that supports more than 200 applications across 16 hospitals.  On the most part, our team is very organized and very experienced.
  • Problem: We are using 3 different systems to communicate current issues (application issues). We have a chat system, email and another application to display limited issue details.
  • My Proposal: I would like to build a a system that allows users to start an forum (aka issue) and allow others to communicate issue related matter in that forum.  In short, an issue tracking system.

Requirements:

  • Reliability is the most important factor - lives depend on it!
  • Up to 30 - 70 users online at any given time
  • Customizable modules
  • Add user defined modules

The Question:

Is this forum module well suited for the task?  Or are there more suitable modules for what I am trying to accomplish?  Any advice is appreciated!

James Dennis

James,

welcome to the DotNetNuke community. DotNetNuke itself is reliable (yes, I know, this site does not always seem to proove this statement) and there are very stable modules available as well (If you are looking for mission critical solutions, I would go with professional modules, providing reliable service as well).

If you need an issue tracking system, I would like to encourage you to look for modules designed for this purpuste, e.g. from www.oldturtle.net (I haven't tried them myself) or other vendors.

Cheers from Germany,
Sebastian Leupold

I recommend oldturtle.net because that is easy to set and get going AND you have 5 days for free before you must pay a license and in this time you can use fully functional system. it is allways nice to try it out fully before paying.....

Your description almost perfectly matches a SharePoint site with Office integration and Exchange server.  You may want to leverage what you have rather than starting a fourth system (sorry, the CIO hat comes out in questions like this...).

That said, DNN is a great framework for your custom application setup and there are Help Desk modules available for it.

Thank you for your advice.  Actually, we have a "HEAT" application that does most of the work, such as assigning logs to teams and recording the progress of a job.  Actually, what I am trying to implment here is something very similar to an issue tracker.  I am afraid that my limited experience and knowledge would not allow me to consider Sharepoint.  Anyways, thanks for your advice.
