Hi folks

my understanding of this subject is very limited but here goes - we are looking to install dnn 4.92 on a Windows 2008 (64 bit)  server running IIS 6.0  I presume -   am I correct in thinking the DNN 4.92 binary files (and 3rd party controls) are either 32 bit or 64 bit - if so how can i tell ?

if  they are 32 bit will this be an issue ? - im assuming the .Net 2.0 framework that runs under DNN is also either 32 bit or 64 bit aswell ?

if anyone can shed some light on this matter it would be much appreciated

thanks
John

Windows 2008 is IIS 7.  :)

You can install IIS as 32 bit or 64 bit on a 64 bit OS.  For the most part, DNN runs fine in a 64 bit setup, but it depends some on third party options you choose.  Just because code is 32 bit doesn't mean it doesn't work in 64 bit systems, it really depends on what the code does and how it interfaces with other parts of the system.

Check www.iis.net for help with IIS 7 and choosing 32 or 64 bit.

Please be aware, that DotNetNuke generates IL code only, which gets compiled for the target machine on the fly by the .Net JIT compiler.

The biggest problem i have seen with 64-bit is that microsoft has lead the way but not many vendors are creating software that is truely 64-bit.  They merely emulate 32-bit on a 64-bit system.  I have seen a number of scenerio's where this has caused problems with DotNetNuke, however the problems were not directly related to the dotnetnuke core itself.  In other words, proceed, but proceed with caution :)
