Is it possible to have diffreent SSL certificates servicing different domains / portals on the same DNN instance.  I didn't think this was possible

you may use a multidomain SSL certificate for this purpose.

Its an HR Portal...

I would especially think any HR portal would not want a shared database with any other organization.

This is a related question for multiple DNN installs but with a twist.  For security reasons, I need to separate areas according to the types of users we have.  One DNN install will be editable by users we add internally and will contain some private information about the individuals.  The other DNN install is for those interested in volunteering or providing feedback but we would allow public registration.  To make everyone happy, I am checking to see if I can have two installations (with two databases, two applications, etc.) where one is www.mysite.com and the other is www.mysite.com/friends.  Is this possible?

you can either have multiple portals with different domain addresses on the same DNN installation (content is stored in one database, but clearly separated by business layer) or use two separate installation in differen IIS web sites on the same server without problems. That's how most hosters provider DNN.
