Does it matter for DNN functioning property as Application or as a Virtual Directory.  I will be using DNN for two websites and I would like to know the best configuration.  I really want DNN as the default website in IIS7 and not a App or Virtual Dir.  But, the last time I did this I couldn't get DNN to work.  I have a two registered domain names and will be pointed to the same IP, so I know I have to use the header fucntionality.

I will be using the Install version of DNN, so what is the best way to set this up?

it is always preferable to install DNN in the root of the website, otherwise visitors will need to enter www.mydomain.com/application to access your site.

Finally I got this going!  Whew! The only glitch was I had to give the NETWORK SERVICE full control for it to install.  I have it as my default website in which I originally wanted from the very beginning.

Just so anyone else want to know what I did:

  1. I unzipped the install version of DNN to a folder.
  2. copied all the contents to the root web folder (I did it this way, but I'm sure you can just unzip it to the root).
  3. compiled it with VS 2008
  4. open the properties dialog box for the wwwroot folder and gave NETWORK SERVICE full control.
  5. open the website in the browser and
  6. select auto as my installer

and now I'm up and running on my Windows 2008 Server!

Ok! I tried to log in and I get the error message.  I'm just using the simple default website as my DNN site.  I made no configuration at all to IIS.  So how do I get rid of the message?

A critical error has occurred.
Validation of view_state MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

Note: the is a VHD Windows 2008 Web Server being hosted by a Windows 2008 Server Std.
