This is something where I think Catalook lets itself down.  It looks like it's not easy to setup, but from my own experience the doc just covered all possibly issues people might have with various changes to a standard setup - making it look complicated and a bigger challenge than it really is.

Documentation is mostly thorough but various things are not completely well written and the skinning really could do with a rethink, I think. Or maybe at least much clearer documentation for it.  It is very customisable though I would say... and there's other tools such as OpenWebStudio or XModPro that would allow you to easily build add-ons for it.

Overall it's quite reasonable to use, is very functional and featured pack for a store though not actually multi-currency which was quite a disappointment for me and led me to using a separate Portal for each country/currency.  It does a rough conversion of currencies so others can be displayed, but it's only an estimation and payment can actually only be made in a single currency.

The single most impressive site I've seen recently with Catalook is - http://www.sakesocial.com.  Another site worth a look is http://www.catalooksupport.com.

Overall it's not bad, a few bugs and incoveniences I'd like to see sorted (and have asked)... usually these are sorted fairly quickly, especially if significant.

I think these quotes from unknown sources are really to plug other things.

XModPro is a going to be a new product and is not out yet. Are you saying XModPro has specific features tailored for Catalook or the fact that it can be used to tap into data sources and that's why you mentioned it? I think the regular XMod can do this also.

Hi,

Here's a list of sites I've put live with open source NB_Store, I've also got 3 more on my test server waiting for completion.

Standard NB_Store

http://www.pastis-des-homs.fr/
http://www.menagecadeaux.fr/
http://www.atelierdugantier.fr/
http://www.valpasres.com/

NB_Store just not linked to bank.

http://www.vmdi.fr/
http://www.caumesbureau.com/

Modified version of NB_Store

http://www.affichefluo.com/

I had a difficult time with e-commerce on DNN, that's why I created NB_Store, The documentation is lacking and it's still missing discounts, but I've just release the v1.1.6 beta.  I'm I'm confident I'll be able to get a beta of v1.2, with discounts, out at the end of next month (or maybe the moth after.).

It's open source and free so you've got nothing to lose by giving it a try, you can find it at:

www.codeplex.com/nbstore.

Best of luck,

Dave.

I strongly recommend dotnetnuke community or dotnetnuke core team to put together a "beauty" contest.... looks and feel is everything ..... features ? no that is not that important anymore .....there is to many halfdone catalook installations out there .... we need to see some awesome installations and the sale will rocket for catalook .... nor more techie features .... just impressive look and feel AND speed! .... a few years ago when I was disapointed with catalook speed I did write my own presentation layer .... and wow how fast it became .....

I would recommend Alicommerce and NB_Store. Alicommerce is more powerful than NB _Store. They are both easy to setup and configure. Catalook is probably more powerful than Alicommerce and NB_Store, but its documentation is a nightmare to deal with. You will be spending tons of man hour to find out how to work this module. It doesn't pass my testing plan since it takes too much time to learn how to install and set up. This is one good example of how not to make your customer run away from your product. Documentatiion IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITIES of the modules.

XModPro has had an early bird release out for a little while now, and I expect an official release will be quite soon.  I've not used XMod but thought some limitations may be with it focussing on XML rather than SQL.

OpenWebStudio would certainly be my favourite though. Much easier to work with, more flexible and powerful.  Let down by documentation but enough is there that I think it covers at least what XMod/XModPro can do.

Catalook (and some others) can switch currencies to present prices differently but unfortunately these are only estimated prices based on an exchange rate... and of course changes depending on the purchasers method of payment, bank used etc.  Only a single base currency can be chosen and payment is received in this currency only.

Reading through these, I do agree that the look of an e-commerce site really doesn't say much about DNN e-commerce modules... though comparing styles, layouts, presentation of stores may give an indication of some flexibility of the modules.

Unfortunately the OP has come here with a weak argument, no argument really and then snippets of meaningless quotes from unknown sources - basically saying "e-commerce and DNN is rubbish"... with no details, no basis given... and until he or someone explains this a bit more - where the weak points are, why they say this - it's hard to debate or present solutions.

What I can say is that from what I've seen in webstores online, I've not seen stores that doing anything much more than what can be done with DNN e-commerce modules.
