We are doing this on the Inventue website using the Inventua TopMenu module.  You can see it in action here: http://www.inventua.com

I am interesting in finding out more on the ways Nav can be skinned and applied.

This one is a static sub menu, depending on the root that is selected or that the page falls under.  Is there a simple way of skinning a single Nav object to have the 1st level of the sub menu appear horizontal? ie. looking along the lines of Matthew's Inventua site but as a hover pop-up so 2 clicks aren't required to get to a sub page?

Something I've been wondering about for a while.

You can create two (or even more) instances of the Menu Provider within a Skin

Mainmenu < dnn:nav id="MainMenu" expanddepth="1" controlorientation="horizontal" runat="server">

Just place these 'Tokens' anywhere you like in your Skin

 Greetings all

This is exactly what I need to do but with the submenu showing the child items in a vertical layout. That seems to work ok. Only thing I'm still battling with is to get the sidenav to be open permanently, i.e. not fly-outs, just simple static menu items listed below each other.
My sidenav will only ever be 2 levels deep so I want both levels for the sub-levels to be displayed without fly-outs.

Something like this, where "Home, Menu1-3" is the top level, and the user clicked on Menu2:

Home - Menu1 - Menu2 - Menu 3
[sidenav:]
Menu2.1
  Menu2.1.1
  Menu2.1.2
Menu2.2
Menu2.3

Can this be done with the standard DNN Nav token?

Cheers
Neville
