Currently my organization is in the process of looking for a CMS system (like DNN) and an AMS system.  I have a few questions...

  1. Has anyone used DNN within their organization with an AMS system?
  2. If so, what version of DNN and what AMS system?
  3. Do you still use DNN? Why/Why not?
  4. Integration with AMS, was this more work than planned?
  5. Is the site easy to keep up and navigate?

I have worked with DNN for roughly 3 years and it works well for for me and everything I have done.  I am treading on some new water and need to find some pro's and con's from uses who have used this with an AMS system.  I have narrowed my choices down to DNN and a few other open source products as well as Evectra and a few other paid products.  SharePoint is out of the question as I will eat up this years and next years budget with one purchase.

Thanks!

I thought sharepoint was almost for free to install and the costs were on the consultants needed to implement the info structure ...please tell us more how come sharepoint became to expensive, some calculations would be great because I want to use this more often as an argument for DNN

SharePoint 2003 is setup to be primarilly an internal (Intranet) facing application and if used in the context as you explain, can be "free" or very little cost.  So in my case I have 3 (soon to be 4) public Internet websites and SharePoint 2003 will not work well for these situations.  On the other hand SharePoint 2007 will work for both Intranet and Internet websites.  In my case with 3-4 public facing Internet websites I will need to purchase a few server licenses, some CAL's and SQL Server 2008 Standard.  So it could run over $20k USD.  2007 has many more benefits than 2003 so if you are looking to migrate to SharePoint, check out pricing on 2007 before migrating.

Also if you look at some of the case studies MS has on SharePoint and who has integrated it into their business you will see they are mult-million dollar per year companies.  These are the guys who have very large IT departments and the money to spend on it.  My organization is a non-profit organization with an operating budget of $2 million per year and less than 15 full time staff and one IT professional.  So needless to say, its too expensive for our 3-4 websites.

I have a couple of clients who use DNN as their CMS and they have been very pleased.  Both are national associations  One uses IMIS as their AMS, but there is currently no integration with IMIS.  This has been postponed to a later phase as they work to move their web properties from a custom ASP.NET solution to DNN.  The first web property to be moved was a microsite.  Based on the success of this migration, the association is in the process of moving their remaing 5 or 6 other web properties to DNN.

The second client has been using DNN for about 4 years now and loves it.  They have some basic integration to allow DNN login data to be udpated from their backoffice data, which is Avectra's old Abaze AMS.  They are in the process now of moving to Protech's Microsoft CMS-based AMS called CRM for Members and they plan to continue using DNN for their CMS.

On the AMS side, I've worked for years now with Avectra clients and their netFORUM product has really matured into a solid AMS.  They also have versions available for organizations of all sizes.

Regarding SharePoint, it works well as a collaboratoin platform, but it's not the best WCM solution for most organizations.  We just recently completed a web migration using MOSS 2007 and found the process to be much more complicated and restrictive than working with DNN.  If workflow and versioning are important features, then another WCM like SiteCore or Ektron would be better options than SharePoint.  Of course, they're more expensive too, and many organizations either don't use these features or they could get by with some of the DNN modules available which provide basic workflow and versioning.  Another thing to consider at this point is that both workflow and versioning are on the horizon with DNN.

One other thing most associations need to consider with DNN is the need to replace the built in search with a more robust search solution.  Again, there are some great modules as well as custom solutions available which help to bridge this gap.  All-in-all, DNN makes a lot of sense for associations to use as a WCM framework, especially if the staff of the organization or a trusted vendor have experience with DNN.

Feel free to give me a call.  My company specializes in working with nonprofits and associations and I would be happy to talk with you about your particular needs.

Thanks for the help Don!  We too use iMIS (4.x) and are going away from it as the 15.x version just didn't seem to have the "things" we want.  We are steering towards Protech as it just seems to have the options we want without having to customize any of the source code.  I am really looking for the workflow and taxonimy features which DNN doesn't appear to have so that leaves me to go out and purchase a CMS solution.  No big deal just wanted some other professional opinions.

Thanks
