thanks for your posts.

I have changed the "user name does not exist" to "There was a problem with your request".
(in Language Editor > Authentication > Login)

I realise a savvy attacker will work out that the difference between successful attempts and unsuccessful attempts, due to the confirmation message of a successful attempt. But, at least it's not as blatantly obvious that the username does not exist.

I just wondered if there was a setting to limit 'forgotten username' attempts.

To find usernames - it can be done via the 'forgot password' section, this allows unlimited attempts.

If someone had a big site with 1000 users, attackers could have unlimited attempts to find 1000 usernames. Password attempts may be limited to 5 but this would equate to 5000 attempts in total.

you can configure a number of these settings already in the web.config i.e. use enablePasswordRetrieval to disable the forgot passwords dialog, use passwordAttemptThreshold to set the limit of password attempts, and passwordAttemptWindow to set the time these attempts are allowed in.

As I mentioned in my other post, please forward any security concerns to security@dotnetnuke.com .
