I've followed the many guides and suggestions around here and elsewhere, but cannot seem to get DNN v5.1 using AD Provider 5.0.1 to reliably and automatically log windows accounts on.  Currently I've two main issues:

1) New AD users who haven't logged into DNN before get the login form (Windows option only as others are disabled), upon login they get a user created in the database but NO roles assigned to them (I assumed DNN roles checked as AUTO should be assigned to new users?).

2) Established users keep being asked to login even though I've disabled anonymous access to windowssignin.aspx, I've achieved automatic sign on randomly about twice so far (WindowsAuthentication: True in event viewer), but most of the time it requires me to log in manually.  This sort of indicates something is a bit wonky somewhere!  If I swop to Windows Auth (disable forms) and disable anon auth these users get signed on automatically, but then new users just get denied access with no chance to log in!

BTW DNN is running on Win 2008 + IIS 7.

Anybody have any ideas before I loose my hair!

There seems to be some issues with Windows 2008 that don't occur with Vista but I can't reliably test against it as I don't have a 2008 server available. When you say DNN 5.1 are you talking about the 5.1 beta or DNN 5.0.1? If it's the 5.1 beta then take a look at the 05.00.02 AD provider that I've got in beta on my site (http://dnn.gmss.org). I had to make a lot of changes to the code as there were some bugs that I found with the login process. Whether it'll help with Server 2008 or not I'm not sure.

Thanks for the reply, I'm using v5.1.0.379 (Beta), I'll certainly check out your updated version and let you know how I get on.

Ok, the good news is that the roles are now properly created against a new user when they log-in.  Unfortunately the automatic windows sign-in is still struggling.  One other thing I've noticed when testing is that the delete user option doesn't remove the user from the user or aspnetuser/membership tables, so if you try and recreate the same user you deleted you're told it already exists, deleting the rows from these tables fixes the re-creation though.

Ok, another update for anyone who is interested...

To prove its just not my ham fisted configuration skills I've tested the same setup on locally on my Windows XP + IIS 5.1 PC and the windows auto login works like a charm, so it looks like an issue isolated to Windows 2008 + IIS 7.0.

Hopefully a fix will appear over the next few months as I can imagine W8K is quite common now...
