I am a DNN newbie, and am trying to run a DNN website from source code

that I downloaded from our SVN repository.  I had to make a copy of the database,

and then modify the web.config file to connect to it.  Now when I try and run in Visual

Studio 2008, I get the error in the subject line above.  Obviously, I don't have this web

site really installed on my machine, but am trying to run it "virtually" in VS.  I have searched

all over for this problem, and found only a couple of references, including on this site (but

was not answered).

Is this a DNN thing, a VS thing, or an IIS thing?

Oh, this is using .NET 2.0 and DNN version 4.9.0

Thanks,

Mitch

you should do a real installation and when it's running, edit with VS.

Latest production version is 4.9.4, with a number of security issue fixed since 4.9.0

Sebastian,

Vielen dank!

As we say in America, "no good deed goes unpunished".  I am still working this issue with my boss, but have another question.   I have another DNN installation that is 4.9.4.  It is a simple website I am trying to develop as a DNN user.  I tried adding the repository module today, and all went well.  But when I try to add a category, I get the "A critical error has occurred.  The input string was not in the correct format".    I subsequently tried adding a new attribute, but got :

A critical error has occurred.
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

I know my database is there, and I believe that my connection strings are okay.  Are there any other simple "oops" errors you could point me to?  Is it possible that the Repository does not yet work with the latest version 4.9.4?

Danke,

Mitch
