Background: I'm trying to set up a new installation of DNN . I've manually installed & configured DNN in the past manually several times, but it was sitting in front of Win2k servers. I'm a retired NT4 MCSE, with tons of experience.

OK. I decided to set up a new DNN installation to be used for selling a bunch of inventory I had in storage from an old store I used to own in the 90's. Paper & pencil game stuff. I've had a lot of luck with DNN, set up several commerical sites for friends, and have a coup[le of hobby sites for myself.

I decided I had to have OpenID; I discovered you can't do OpenID on a godaddy shared hosting account, due to the .net permissions and a couple of other factors.

So, I got a Virtual Server at godaddy running windows 2003, and got the Plesk Deluxe pack, because it advertised the software as service DNN installs, and MSDE via Plesk.

After it was setup, I discovered that you have to track down and put the DNN in to the application manager, and as there is apparently no way to manage MSDE via Plesk Deluxe, the application vault refuses to install DNN. So you can't use the application vault for DNN

Fine, I figure, I'll install it manually. I search around the godaddy site for any info that might be applicable; i'm directed to create a folder, put the unzipped DNN files in the folder, then, as a subdirectory from "mydomain", I create a virtual directory in IIS pointing at the C:\dotnetnuke folder. I'm also directed to create a database in MSDE called DotNetNuke, which I do. I change the MSDE SA password while I'm at it, and change web.config to refect this.

All I'm getting when i surf to http://mydomain/DotNetNuke or http://mydomain/DotNetNuke/install.aspx is "Server Application Unavailable"

Error log information is Event Type:    Error
Event Source:    ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0
Description:
Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80070005 Access is denied.

This may be a simple problem, it may not, I cleared up my calendar for 2 1/2 weeks to set this up, and spent 20 hours a day for the last 3 days just to get to this point, trying to get Plesk Deluxe to work like it was "supposed" to, and dealing with a flaky ISP that only gave me intermittent 15-minutes at a time access all day saturday. I'm so stressed out and overwhelmed at this point I could see me having problems putting in a CD upside down.

Why did I do this at godaddy, instead of going to a "real" host? Because up until 3 years ago, going back to 1996, I've only hosted on my own servers, in my own building. I had to move to the sticks, so had to put all my domains on web hosts. I split things up between the several domains, DH2.net, easycgi and godaddy. the only one I never had any problems with was godaddy. The price for a virtual server was right, and I just couldn't find a reasonably priced site to do CoLo.

Help?

That's not a DNN error, it's an IIS error.  You don't say what Windows/IIS version, but basically you need to make sure the account running the ASP.NET process has permission to do so.  Take a look at this thread:

By the way, www.iis.net and www.asp.net are good places for help in configuring the ASP.NET and IIS aspects of running a virtual server.  They share a membership database so registering on one gives you access to both with the same account.

Those were some fantiastic links!

It was IIS6 (I did say Win2k3), BTW. I got past that problem, but the way I did it was to ignore the FAQ's; I got rid of the c:\DotNetNuke directory that godaddy advises and just copied the files to /dnn in the main web folder. Some more errors came up, but I was able to figure them out quickly with the links you provided. Hopefully, I'm on the path to success now...I'm already at "configure database" page. At this point I'm not even going to worry about getting it in the root directory, as long as I can get it to install.

Thanks again.
