You probably can try to play around with the default dotncurrent skin.
Try to copy and delete some parts, and you should understand how its going to work.

wwwroot\Portals\_default\Skins\MinimalExtropy\index.html

That file should be a good starting place, simply make your layout and insert the tokens for the elements you desire.

A couple notes:
- Always have a [NAV] and [LOGIN] token in your skin
- Always make sure your skin has a Content Pane section , in the default skin it's assigned to a TD element:

I found PACKT publishing's DotNetNuke Skinning Tutorial (by Darren Neese) to be incredibly helpful.
