I have an old dnn portal running happily for a couple of years on dnn3.3.4. I just now noticed that the menu is completely fubar'd with IE8. Looking around the net I do not seem to be the only one with this problem (not surprising since solpart manue used to be so frequently used before the newer dnn version), but yet I haven't been able to find any workable solution at all. Is it a lost cause?

If DNN isn't interested in a fix because they have "moved on", can anyone perhaps help me with how I can replace solpart with some other menu? PLEASE?

The quickest option I've found is to put the compatibility meta-tag into the head section of default.aspx:

<#meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" #>

However, remove the #s as I had to put them there so the text editor wouldn't eat the tag.

Thanks for the response, but this was the first thing I tried. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything, and using the Developer Tools built into IE8 I have checked all the various display methods (IE7, IE8 compatibility, IE8) and modes (quirks, standard) and it doesn't much change the behaviour.

After a hair-ripping whole day trying to google solutions I started comparing the source code as shown in IE8 and in Opera (or Firefox), which renders the menu just fine, and noticed that in the IE8 source code, the "spmenu.js" file wasn't even referenced. This explains why I have not been able to track any errors in IE8! spmenu.js is simply never loaded in IE8.

I am now trying to figure out what is loading spmenu.js (to see why it fails in IE8). Anyone have any idea?

Well, I kind of solved it I think. Not the problem itself, but the mystery of what is happening. In short: the problem only seems to occur when running IE8 on Windows XP. It does not appear when running IE8 on Vista. Simple as that.
