The directions are technically wrong.  The account that needs access is the ASP.NET process acount, which on Server 2003 or 2008 is Network Service by default.  But if you change the process account, those accounts do not need access, you need to grant access to the new account.  Personally, I'd never set the anonymous user account as the process account, the security isn't there if you do but, if that's the way it's set, that's what needs to have access.

Well, apparently there is something different in 2008/IIS7.  I'm just setting up my first DNN install using that system, and it doesn't seem to follow the old requirements, so I'll have to do some more investigating to see what exactly is different.    Adding the NETWORK SERVICE into the permissions list doesn't work, it gives the above mentioned error.  As soon as I added the IUSR account to the folder ACL, it started working.

Dan, from my experience, it is Identity switching, which determines, which user permission is needed.

Dan, IUSR is the default standard anonymous user account for IIS. This account should only have Read, List, & Read & Execute recursive permission by default. Giving this account write access exposes you to security issues! Your correct that it is also needed if your not using windows authentication (identity impersonation), or active directory.
