I am developing a DNN portal to host a public portal + support server (SmarterTrack) and possibly (mail) SmarterMail on the same server. What is the proper SQL edition to use? Will SQL Express 2008 SP1 actually scale enough to give me enough performance? If not which specific edition should I be investing in?

how much traffic do you expect? maybe you want to start with express and switch to full version, when the limits are reached.

We expect 5K customers per day using the DNN portal. As for specific bandwidth I am unsure we be combining email and support services. I know what we do currently but that will not be appropriate after the migration to DNN.

SQL Server Express should be sufficient to server your users easily, if caching is used properly in Host Settings as well as in the module installed.
