I've just added this module to a page on my site to replace my current download page (just links to files in a seperate directory on the server my site is on), and i'm having a problem uploading large files. All the files i'm uploading are zipped. I uploaded a small one to test it, and that worked fine.

I then tried to upload a 7.55MB zip containing fies for an mirc bot, but got the following error once it had finished, and it wasn't added:

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Any idea what's causing it and how to fix it?

Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

there is a file size limit in web.config , which is by default AFAIR around 3MB. you may need to increase timeout as well, there are a couple of threads already in these forums for this issue.

Thanks. I found the threads on editing the configuration file right after posting, and have now made the changes needed.

I have now been able to upload all the files I wanted.

Besides the default HTTP receive buffer size limit setting that Sebastian has pointed out, the maximum file size you can upload via web browser is limited by IIS work process timeout. Essentially, the IIS work process has to wait until the upload is completed. Since HTTP protocol is stateless the server des no know if you are uploading a large file or your script has simply locked up. Eventually depending on server settings your work process will terminate and as result the upload will fail. Therefore you mileage will vary depending on how much data you can upload in a given amount of time.

This is not a DNN limitation, rather the nature of HTTP protocol. All web based uploads merely emulate an upload. In reality your browser converts binary file in to a base64 encoded ASCI text and posts it to the server similar to a giant text form. This process is inefficient because when binary file are converted to ASCI base64 encoding it bloats the total size by 35% to 40% which further reduces the file size you can upload.

Generally you should use FTP client to upload large files, not only it will be faster but you will also reduce the possibility of file corruption or the process crashing on you.
