I am trying to add a new portal alias to an existing site and for some reason the new alias is not being recognised.

Example

Current site:  stageportal.XXXX.com/rctest2

New alias: stageportal.XXX.com/RichardTest

I see both alias' in the portal list, but when I click on the new alias I get a 404 page not found error.

However if I use this link: https://stageportal.XXXX.com/Default.aspx?alias=stageportal.XXXX.com/RichardTest

I get to the site perfectly OK.

I am sure that I have simply added a new portal alias in the past and it has worked.

FYI -  I am running DNN v4.9.4

there needs to be a folder named as the child portal, which AFAIR is not created, if you just add a portal alias. Duplicate folder rctest2 to RichardTest, and you should succeed.

Thanks Sebastian.

I didn't realise that this required a manual process - but it I guess it makes perfect sense that a folder is required.
