Hi

I am sure this is a real newbie question but I am going to ask anyway.

Can dotnetnuke be configured to run without a database maybe writing to XML files instead?

It is just that I have a website on a .NET 2.0 platform but no database and I would like to put dotnetnuke up there for my own website but cannot unless I can use it without a database.

Thanks for your help

Andy

While you could technically write a provider that could use XML, you'd end up being single session since you'd really have to do some impressive work to manage concurrency control on what's essentially a text file.

More specific to your question, you could just use SQL Express. Support is built in, and no licensing is needed. I assume the reason you can't use a database is your ISP either doesn't provide a standard SQL Server option or charges for that. One nice thing about the SQL Express option is you can build the site totally ofline and ship it up to your ISP database and all.

Your provider may not allow SQL Express to run, in that case I'd recommend using a different one.

DNN is all about the database really - you have the perfect advice in the previous post. Most hosting providers provide cheap options or even "free" options for SQL Server databases, you can run SQL Express locally for development and then use SQL server on your hosting provider if you so wish.
