Hi.

I just started working with DNN and i really like it.  I'm working on a project for customer relations (kind of), where the registrars of the site can login and find contact info, files and documents and other stuff related to their specific account.  User1 has his documents, User2 has his, and there are also public documents, however User2 should not be able to read User1's docs etc.

I was thinkin of giving each registrar his own Child Portal which means I need 50+ portals... And I'm not sure how to administrate this. I dont want to have to go into each portal to e.g. add a tab or some new document.  Is it possible to make global changes that occur on every child portal?

Or, should I rethink my approach totally?   I'm worried that the user management and rights will make things complicated (since different content should be available depending on your user and group)

Any feedback is greatly appriciated.

Patrik,

for management reasons, I wouldn't create child portals per client.

use modules, which allow to restrict access by user,  e.g. Repository or UserDefinedTable, there is also free Userfiles module @ UserFiles.codeplex.com.

Hi Sebastian, thanks you the reply.

I realized myself that it wouldn't be smart to have lots of portals.

I looked into those modules and they look nice, thanks!

However i'm still concerned about how to administrate this.-.  Lets say i want to have post announcements on my page, and i dont want all users to see certain announcements, how will i go about doing this? Having one module per announcement?

I want textboxes with customer info (contacts etc) for each constomer, same question here, how will i administrate this? I can add a module for each customer and set the rights so that the user only sees its own info, but me as an administrator would then se lots and lots of customer info modules when editing, right?

Im just a bit confused.. maybe im just not thinking straight at the moment.

Patrik,

UserDefinedTable allows to use a single instance for all news and use a filter when displaying items - which supports tokens, e.g. if you create a table and provide a field "userName" to specify, whom it shall be displayed to, you may specify a filter "[user:username]=UserName" and each user will get displayed items for him only. Whether the filter shall be based on username, ID, a role membership or user profile property like city depends on your use case.

Sebastian,

Thank you very much, you just made things so much clearer for me.

I did not realize UDT (its called form and List now, right? :-) would be that flexible. It seems to work quite well for my needs.
I will definitely give it a more in-depth look and try it out.

Thanks again,

Patrik
