I'm going to implement what I have said in the above paragraph hoping that it is what I need. Should I be concerned about the fact that I'm making two trips to the host server on every delete? (i.e. calling update and then delete?)

You want to ask yourself, how many deletes will there be throughout the day? I have some DNN sites that can performs 20-30 thousand inserts and updates in a single hour and we STILL perform the logging that I'm describing. If the server can't handle it, get a bigger server :)

Also note the only reason I suggest using Transaction Scope is to avoid your delete happening before your Insert. I have seen this happen about 001% of the time, but that is enough for you to go whoh!

Also whenever the sql server was having problems it ALWAYS was because the proper indexes were not created or they were not updated. SQL server can handle truly massive loads so if you encounter problems trust me look at your indexes.
