I am moving my dnn install to a new server at the same hosting provider.  Once I move the dnn site to the new server with a new IP, I assume there will be a time that some users will be resolving to the old server and some to the new server.  I am concerned about people registering on the old server during the time it takes for everyone to resolve to the new server.

I had 2 ideas.  1.  Shut off new registrations until I shut down the old one and the new one is running.  2.  A redirect to the new server.

Any other ideas?

I just did this a few weeks back.  Assuming you have control of the DNS, reduce the TTLs to 5 mins or 15 mins.  This is not fool-proof because many large ISPs ignore low TTLs.  Depending on how busy your site is - and whether or not you have global visitors - one thing to consider is making the switch late at night (or early in the morning).  I did mine around 2 am and there was almost no site activity.  My visitors are from 2 or 3 time zones at best.

another trick would be to have an alternative url available for your new site, and redirect visitors from the old site to the new url

even better use for exapmle ww2.yourwebsite.com for the old site but get it going well in time before the move .... you can always save the transcationsloggs on the old sites MS-SQL database and import them in the new one after the swap has been done ....
