Hi, I am a complete beginner when it comes to proper programming. I have a business background so didn't even to IT stuff at UNI....

I have 15 years expereience in databases (datawarehousing and bus. intelligence)) and SQL (not PLSQL... but a bit of TSQL) and a bit of HTML tpye stuff.....but absolutely zero in VB, C# etc etc.... that is... i've never written what I would consider a program!

I'd like to pick up these skills so I can develop my own DNN modules - as well as other stuff.

Where should I start?

Thanks.

I am making the assumption that I do need to learn at least one programming language....... please correct if I am wrong.

There are a number of modules our there which are very extensible. Without programming skills per se you can accomplish a lot with them. The one I use in this way is Enterprise forms. With your database skills and the way Enterprise forms can do various things with various databases (doesn't have to be SQL Server or the DNN database) you would be able to accomplish a lot. Learn some snippets of C# code and you can add custom functionality.

Another module which is engineered to allow you to build your own functionality is XMod. I can't tell you anything about it. There are others as well, but I will let others describe them.

For building your own modules from scratch - yes, get into C# or VB.NET. Either will do. If I were starting from scratch right now I'd probably go C# but I have a VB background, and so mostly use VB.NET with no regrets. Have fun!

if you want to learn programming, vb.net should be a good starting point and there are a couple of books for beginners, how to use it for desktop applications and web sites. To create your own DNN modules you need to get into the DNN framework as well, which adds its own API, leveraging part of the stuff you would need to create on your own without it. There are module development tutorials at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com and a number of simple modules around, you may learn from.
