I've recently been struggling a bit with setting the width of controls in custom modules.

When creating an ASCX containing a data list I want to define that the list takes up all the space available in the pane into which the module is inserted and then use percentages for widths on the columns in the list to control the relative sizes. I wanted to avoid having to hard-code the width in the module so that it suits as many uses as possible.

However, if you set the width of the list to 100% in the ascx markup it doesn't take up all of the pane in which it sits, instead it takes up only about half of the width and all the columns are very compressed. Is there a way to say 'use all the available width' if 100% doesn't do it?

What do others do about the widths of their controls? If you can't use 100% then is there a 'standard' width that everyone tries to use for consistency? A module created from the compiled module template in the starter kit has a width of 650 set on one of the controls, but this is too wide for some of our skins.

Any input would be gratefully received

For the time being I've added a CssClass to the data list so that we can target it in the container's CSS.

However, we're lucky in that we have a Creative team that do our skinning for us. That solution doesn't suit those who buy their skins off the peg.

I'd relally appreciate hearing what other module developers do about this.

Has nobody got any input to this?
