5.1.1 works for me everytime I install it, especially new installs. I can install it in 5 mins flat.

You must makes sure you unzip the whole package (no missing files, some extractors avoid extracing certain files), make sure files permissions are correct and IIS permissions are correct.

I'm sure what you are experencing here is not a DNN issue, but a config issue at your end, check sites such as mitchsellers.com for advice on how to install.

I found that if I take the default (typical install) it works just fine.  It is when I choose custom that it errors out.  When asked which modules I would like to install, I choose all of them.  I am getting the same error as in this thread.

I had this problem and found that IIS was timing out before the process could complete.  I changed two IIS settings for the Virtual Directory to get around the problem:
  1. Virtual Directory Tab
    1. Click the button "Configuration" in the lower section of the screen (You now have a window named "Application Configuration")
    2. Go to the tab "Options"
    3. ASP Script Timeout: 600.  This value needs to be increased for the installation to avoid timeouts, but can be set back to 90 after the installation is complete.
  2. ASP.NET Tab
    1. Click Edit Configuration
    2. Click Application tab
    3. Change "Request execution timeout (seconds)" to 600 so that the installation doesn't timeout.  It can be changed back to 110 after the installation is complete.
