I have a situation where use of a network share would be a preferable location for lots of files as opposed to portal root. Want to be able to leverage standard DNN roles for security as normal. Additionally, want to be able to handle files directly and not via DNN interface, and either not need synchronization, or be able to synchronize as the File Manager does/can.

Is there a way to accomplish this? Perhaps a 3rd party module?

Create a virtual directory (in IIS) under the portal root pointing to the network share.  Resynch the files and you should be okay.  You will need to resynch files manually when you update them outside of DNN, or make sure DNN is set to resynch automatically (which may not be immediate).

Jeff,

Interesting thought - I suppose I'd have to use the absolute path as the name of the virtual directory for that to work. Then it might work for accessing with a browser. But does DNN use the http path when synchronizing folders and files? Or rather a relative physical path from the application root?

Is this something you've done? I'll give it a try but it has me curious -

Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.

Never done it in DNN, but I assume DNN would obey the virtual folder path, standard ASP.NET functions do.  There is (or was) a file list module floating around, Manchester File List, adapted from code I used in another ASP.NET app.  I think Ventrian File LInks was also supposed to get an option to read from the Windows directory instead of the DNN file list, but not sure that ever happened.

I keep swearing I'm going to code a file lister that lists from a physical file folder but I never seem to actually do it...  :)
