I downloaded the latest update because my Dotnetnuke said critical update. I have version 04.09.00. I had no idea what to do with the update I downloaded. It is surprising there aren't some basic steps listed somewhere on the dotnetnuke or we the website. Someone please provide me with some written instructions, bullets if possible.

Going crazy here.

Hi TC

I think the instructions are in the zip file... they are there.

Steps I take and rarely had a problem.

  1. Full backup of DNN files and Database (do this without fail!)
  2. Unzip DNN Update file over the top of existing files and replace all files
  3. Run the URL with /install/install.aspx?mode=install (I always do this on the server)

From memory I really think that's all there is to it.  I think in over 2 years, updating with every version it's run smoothly (though previously had to touch web.config, don't now).

Dear David,

Thank you for this...  It seems so simple but:

Is there the facility within DNN to do a complete backup along with the database.  Has anyone a product that will do it seemlessly with proven restores or are we talking expensive software here.  (Backing up a website the old way was easy!)

Why is this method not outlined somewhere in the documentation.  The latest version does not seem to have anything at all.  It all refers to 4.x.x software not 5.x.x

Regards,

Chris.

Backup/restore of files and database needs to be done externally (there are 3rd party modules for hosted portals though) using server tools or hosting panels.

if you are using file based database connection (using database.mdf in the connectio string inside web.config file) you simply backup the file, otherwise you may use SQL Server command line backup or SQL Server Management Studio (Express).
