I want to temporarily shutdown a portal and display a custom "Website temporarily down" page. I want to do a redesign and add new pages and I don't want it viewable to the public. The closest thing I have found is tuning off all pages. Is there a way or can this feature be added?

I can think of two ways to handle this:

  1. Change your ipaddress to point to a different "temp" folder thru IIS
  2. Create a second portal.
    1. Create a new subdomain name active.mydomainname.com and add it to the existing portal
    2. Create a new subdomain name temp.mydomainname.com and add it to a new "temp" portal that only has a "Website temporarily down" page.
    3. Remove the www.mydomainname.com from the original portal and add it to the second "temp" portal.

Now when users browse to www.mydomainname.com they'll get the "temp" portal, but you can still get to the original portal by going to active.mydomainname.com.

My suggestion would be to create a page that has your 'web site down' message and for this page only apply a skin that has no navigation menu/items or login links.
Then take a note of the page you use to login in and save it, so you can access the portal yourself, appending '?ctl=login' also works in most cases.
Once you are happy you can access the portal without clicking on a link, go to the site settings for the portal and change the address of the home page to the new 'web site down' page.
This is quick and will stop any user who doesn't know the actual addresses of other pages.
