I just upgraded from 4.9.4 to 4.9.5, when the file transfer completed, I went to the site and got the typical "Upgrading DotNetNuke" screen.  It upgraded the database, reported success, then provided the "click here to access your portal message".

When I click to access the portal, it just shows the upgrading screen again and again and again...

Okay, the problem was that the FTP transfer was aborted and never finished uploading the update to the site.

So, I uploaded the update again, and everything ran as expected.

I also need to upgrade from 4.9.4 to 4.9.5 (to fix the SEO issue). I'm paranoid about this so I want to make sure I do it right. I've read a couple of install/upgrade docs but they seem to address upgrading from different major versions and I'm not sure how much applies. Can you tell/confirm what you did for the upgrade? I'm specifically interested in changes to web.config. Is this the process?

1. Save/rename web.config

2. Upload the upgrade package (do I have to fix any permissions after uploading the files?)

3. Rename release.config to web.config and make the same edits as in the original.

4. Browse to the site. (How do you keep people from hitting the site before you've completed the above steps?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

There are two ways of preventing your site from being upgraded before you are ready, one is to set <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="false" /> in your web.config, the other is to create a file called app_offline.htm with some blurb explaining that the site is being upgraded and put it in your root folder. 1) will simply stop an upgrade from happening, 2) will prevent the site from being accessed at all.  If you have forums or other modules that accept data and store it in the database, use 2)  Actually, you should probably use 1) and 2) for all upgrades, if this isn't the case, I'm sure someone will chime in.

Now  BACKUP YOUR FILE SYSTEM AND  DATABASE.

As you are using 4.9.4 you can unzip/ftp the upgrade package over your existing file system.  There are reported problems of the built in decompressor not unzipping the files properly so use something like Winrar or winzip to do this.

You don't need to make any changes to web.config, the installer will look after this for you, your permissions shouldn't need to change.

If you created an app_offline.htm file, you should now rename this (it doesn't matter what to, the site will start once it's not there); you should now browse to http://mysite.com/install/install.aspx to kick off the upgrade.

Please don't forget step 0: Always start upgrades with a complete backup of all files and database!
