Lack of support for DNN is also a major contributing factor of the headace's of installation. I installed 3.2 with only minor problems, mostly my fault. (syntax and variable value omissions). However 3.2 uses ASPNET 1.1 and 4.03 uses 2.0. So I can see what flanakin is saying, because I've been trying to get 4.03 to work for a month now, and without support from DNN's group, Its impossible. also, flanakin is the only one I see trying to help, and with all the post's DNN gets on installation issues alone, I dont see how everybody that is trying to get this installed could be helped. I've made one, two, three, posts about installing 4.03. None of which were answered until i posted in another thread (this one). Then, only one was replied to, not answered.

ASMINC,

OK, lets get your application working.

  • What Windows OS are you installing on?
  • What version of SQL are  you using?  ex.  SQL 2000, SQL 2005, SQL 2005 express
  • Are you using SQL authentication or Local windows authentication for the database?

Download the guide that I made last week, its 4 pages with screen shots.

Good luck,

Thanks for the guide.

I would like to add a few more points.

Don't use firefox for the install.

Install IIS first before the dot net framework .. if you have dot net already on .. uninstall it then install IIS.

Install SQLexpress last.

This link tells you to install IIS before .NET
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=116989&SiteID=1

and this link tells you to install .NET before sql express
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Bloody microsoft .. can't even get their own software to play nice.

Once again, this points up how complex things can get.  I'm new to DotNetNuke so 4.03 was my first install.  I had problems on my first run at it but then deleted everything and went at it again.  Turns out I had skipped a step even though I would have sworn I followed the instructions exactly.  The second install went fine but then the source code had a ton of errors.  It turns out that some files unjipped with "!" where "t" should have been.  After I renamed those 3 or 4 files, things were cooking and I played with it in learning mode for a couple of weeks.

Then I wanted to start over so i deleted everything again, did the install, renamed the files, and it didn't work.  Turns out that I couldn't install from memory like I thought.  On the second try with a reference, all went fine.

And I'll have to say that Eric Henson's instructions are the best I have seen so far.  As for suggestions for improving the documentation, I'd say "Add a link to his instructions."  For suggestions on the install, don't report success unless everything worked, including the portals and the optional installs.  Otherwise, thanks for a great product!

Great Instructions, but they're not for what im doing. Im trying to install this on a remote server, and thats where im getting hung up. Server is running SQL 2005, Server 2003, with SQL auth, using ASPNET 2.0. I installed 3.2 and used ASPNET 1.1 just to see if it would work. So I had 3.2 running fine, but im getting upgrade and version errors when I install 4.03. However Im not upgrading anything, fresh install, and its not setting the variables.
