I decided yesterday to try and upgrade my development site from v4.9.3 to v5.1.

The site is run totally inside Visual Studio 2008 and using SQLExpress (with the database.mdf file being held in the App_Data folder).

Before doing anything else, I took a complete back-up of all the files.

I then ran the upgrade, which although it worked, there were a number of issues, mainly connected to home developed custom modules.

So I decided I would go back to my old version.

  1. I deleted all the files in my folder
  2. I then restored all the files from the backup.

Now though, when I try to run my site, it keeps attempting to carry out the upgrade again

What could I be missing in the restore?

If you are running against a local database and you deleted all files and then copied the old ones back I am not sure.  Have you restarted the web server service?  It sounds like the web.config, database, or something is still there from the newer version. Did you delete and then copy the old ones back, or just copy the old stuff over the top of the new/upgrades site?

This is what I don't understand - all my files where in a single folder (called iSuite), including the database.mdf file inside the app_data folder.

Before the upgrade I copied all the files & folders from my iSuite folder to a back-up directory.

After the upgrade failed, I deleted every file & folder from my iSuite folder and then copied back all the files & folders from my back-up directory.

I have done this a couple of times, but I still get the site attempting to upgrade after I have restored all my files????

Most odd and most frustrating!!!

  My bad, sorry

While pulling my hair out trying to fix this, I was studying my web.config file when I noticed that I was actually pointing to a different database - Doh!

No idea when I must of made that change, I have been using this development site for some time now.

Anyway, went back to my DBA and he managed to restore the DB from before I did the upgrade (just as well I spotted it this morning as the backup is only kept for 3 days and would of been over-written tonight!).

Hey Presto, I am back up and working again!
