Choices have to be made! The Events team is thinking about the release (05.01.00) after the current release (05.00.03) we are working on. What should we do? Stay compatible with DNN 4.x or take the bullet and set DNN 5.1.x as minimum requirement?

Live ain't easy. even for our hobby/free time projects tough choices have to be made.

Compatible with DNN 4.7 and up

Up until now, we have had Events compatible with DNN 4.7 and up.  But we are looking further away then the version we are currently (5.0.3) working on. For the current working version, our target is to solve all know bugs and create some enhancements (more then 30 issues have been identified and solved already, see this list on Gemini).

But should we move to DNN 5.x?

But what should we do afterwards? What should we do with the next version (Events 5.1.0, somewhere end of this year) in which we will try to enhance user experience? Supporting 2 different Events versions is not an option. The Events team does not have the resources available to do so.

DNN 5.x is more and more tempting to set as base level. Many enhancements, better ClientAPI, a new installer and more that could be beneficial for the next version of Events. And while we were a little worried about DNN 5.x stability at the beginning of this year, I think it is safe to say that DNN 5.1.x and up is a stable platform, at least as stable as but probably better then the latest version of DNN 4.x.

What is your opinion?

Can we set the minimum requirement for Events 5.1 to be DNN 5.1.x? Let's have some votes. Reply to this posting with your opinion!

Peter,

I agree with the general direction towards DNN Release 5.x compatability.  However, it would help in the general determination if you could specify the benefits/features that would accrue with the migration of Release 5.x rather than staying with 4.9.x for the immediate future.

There are some rather interesting enhancements planned for the Events module; but those enhancements would not be made available to those users who, for whatever reason, are unable to upgrade to DNN 5.x at the current time.

In the past, it came as a big shock to me that I could not deploy the new forms package on DNN 4.9.x, as it was made compatible only with DNN 5.x.  This caused great angst with my clients.

It might be beneficial to provide a date certain when DNN 5.x would be required to take advantage of several new capabilities.  Say, January 1, 2010.....

Keep up the good work on  this module...

Regards,

Hans

Hans,

The project team is defining scope. There are some interesting options we could do only in DNN 5.x. I do not want to elaborate too much, since we are still discussing this. An Events 5.1 release would be due somewehere end of 2009. So there is still time.

Our idea is that Events 5.0.3 will fix all know bugs and we do not need to bring out another bug fix (which will take our time).

BTW: We can use a good tester in our team. This tester would get access to early releases...

As someone who's created a handful of modules for their own site and just recently went through the task of upgrading to 5.1.x, I would say bite the bullet and do it now.  You will have to do it at some point as old function calls and libraries are now oboslete in 5.1.x.  They have made significant improvements codewise in the API making things much easier for developers.

I thought I read somewhere that DNN 4.9 is now an "obsolete" version and users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to 5.1.4.  This is another good reason to make your change now.  The CORE is no longer being updated for 4.x so people will have to upgrade to the latest version to get new features/bug fixes.  I think it's OK for you to require the same for your module.  It will be a hastle for some in the short term who can't upgrade just yet.  But, the build you have out now is pretty solid and should be "usable" by them until they can upgrade.

Just my two cents.
