This seems a bad general solution because you are assuming that your module is the only one on the page and only appears once.

How should it work if the user puts your module on the same page twice?

There is only one answer. Don't do it.

If you really must do this, then probably simplest is to create a skin object that displays your module's special breadcrumbs. Place it next to the real breadcrumbs in the skin. Whatever you do, ties together modules, skin and breadcrumbs in a rather ugly manner.

I feel the same way.  I know I can #HACK# it together, but an elegant way to interface with the breadcrumb (a VERY important website UI component) would be ideal.  Maybe 7.1?
