What are some of the ways you guys develop custom licenses for your modules?

IE - restrict a module to only being installed in one portal at a time, etc.

I'd like to do this without having the module access my database and check for a license every time it's loaded, but I can't seem to think of a way around this.

You will have to store the license information somewhere.  At ComSite we generate an instanceID for the site by using some pertinant information about the given site.  We then have a key that we can apply against that InstanceID which tells us if it's licenced or not.  I don't want to give too much away publically, feel free to contact me via email or on our site http://www.comsite.org and I would be happy to give you some ideas.

if you want to protect your module (licensing is a iuridical term), you need to find a way of quickly validate licensing information, e.g. by comparing a stored information against (hash value of) portal/host GUID. This shouldn't take much time and you may keep the result in cache.

This is 3 years old but might have some valid points for you (in hindsight my pricing model with Smart-Thinker was all wrong and led to it's unsustainability).
