I had been fairly happy with Catalook until 1) I realised it's not truly multi-currency and 2) a minorbug I identified resulted in the feature being removed.

I stuck with a version that's a few months old to maintain the feature that's recently been removed.

The feature was the pricing could be entered as tax inclusive rather than exclusive and it worked fine except the calculation of the tax compenent wasn't actually applied when a purchaser was tax exempt (though it was showing the tax calculation).

Instead of fixing the bug which I clearly pointed out (screenshots, access to server etc) this feature was removed as the develop said they couldn't reduce tax from a price inclusive of tax though they were able to add tax on. This meant prices are all considered to be entered tax exclusive - though as a manufacturer/wholesaler and online retailer - our focus on presenting price was purely the rrp (ie tax inclusive).  So I chose to remain with a version that's a few months old.

Now Catalook needs a separate version to be installed to be compatible with DNN 5. On a test server this is difficult in itself since the Catalook version for DNN5 is lower than it is for DNN4 so it prevents installation.

What I'm stuck with now is being forced to upgrade Catalook to run of DNN5 and then losing the previous feature of entering tax inclusive pricing or remain with DNN4.

This is really just the venting of a frustration that's been 6+ months since the bug was discovered and then having the feature simply removed.  Now developers (not only Catalook) don't have modules upgrading nearly as smoothly as I can see with the DNN Core modules.  3rd party modules are the biggest DNN 4 to 5 headache.

David,

I understand your frustration, removing required features are always a bad decision for a user and you should contact CataLook, explain your use case and find a solution. From my POV, there needs to be an option to provide Tax including prices, this is a requirement in Germany as well, if you are not targeting business clients exclusively - and due to the fact, that CataLook is a German based company as well, I am sure, they will provide you with a solution.

On the other hand, I also understand the problems, developers may face.  DNN 5 did not have a glorious start, due to different reasons, which for sure did cost a lot of confidence, which now need to be regained by solid and stable versions. Obviously, there is a need of staying up2date, with ASP.Net 4.0 on the horizon.

Cheers from Germany,

Not sure if this is a solution or not, but the r2i guys have used ListX (now Open Web Studio) to create interfaces for Catalook.  Open Web Studio is free to use, and perhaps could be set up to handle the function you need, it's just a matter of the huge learning curve involved.  I preferred ListX even though it wasn't free, it was a lot easier for a non-programmer to use than the open source Open Web Studio.  But, you can do just about anything you want or need with it, including math calculations.  Probably not any easier than modifying the source code of Catalook and compiling it yourself, though.

It's a shame that Catalook is truly the best e-commerce solution out there, or at least the most feature rich, yet you are required to be tied to specific DNN versions, a hassle to upgrade skins if you dare venture into an upgrade, and a really unorganized user interface in the admin modules or in other words not simple and intuitive.  The default skins are also extremely unattractive and create a lot of work to make a catalog actually look nice when you really expect that kind of thing out-of-box.  Still, it's the best choice out there and the most number of payment gateways supported without having to program your own.  I'm watching some of these new e-commerce modules for DNN that show potential to offer some heavy competition in the future, though, if they can survive long enough.

Unfortunately I can't hold my breath for Catalook to fix this.  Had already spent months going over the issue, showing it in as much detail as possible as well as pointing out they already had the calculation for the VAT working but just not applied properly to the cart on checkout.

It was extremely frustrating for their reponse to be complete removal of the feature (though it's still shown as an option, just not applied), and with them saying it's not possible to calculate the VAT on an item when it is already included (yes, I pointed out it made no difference and gave examples, plus showing again that they already had it working!).

OpenWebStudio is definitely something I'd like to see used, but the time to create a full e-commerce solution is just too heavy for my needs... especially when I'd purchased Catalook and having these (and other) difficulties.

I've been keeping an eye on other options, having switched to Catalook from SDN already and slightly reluctant to change yet again.  Definitely far from intuitive and things such as skinning do become clearer after fiddling with it but ridiculously poor documentation and a crazy setup of how to skin something which could be made far easier does give the competition direction.
