Hi,

I have been studying the MinimalExtropy skin that comes with DNN V5 as I am considering using it as a basis for my own designs. I have specifically been looking at the use of PNG and GIF images and I am trying to understand why some PNGs are replaced with a GIF version, when the browser in use is IE6, and some are not. I understand the PNG problem with IE6 and I understand that some PNGs are not being replaced because they have no transparency and therefore it is not necessary; specifically:

1.       Body_bg.png

2.       Bread_bg.png

3.       Logo_top_bg.png

4.       Menu_bg.png

Here is what I don’t understand: Why have they chosen to use GIF files for all browsers with the menu active and menu hover images; specifically:

1.       Menu_active.gif

2.       Menu_hover.gif

3.       Submenu_active.gif

4.       Submenu_hover.gif

They have also used a GIF for search.gif.

They seem to be very intentional with their design so I am sure there is a logical reason for their choices but I don’t understand. Anyone have any ideas? I would like to understand why I am doing something before I proceed. Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Fred

Hi Fred.

IE6 does not support transparent png files by default.

The design has changed quite a bit before it has been released and therefor there are some png being replaced by gifs for which this is not really needed.

Also the menu.gif files you mention could have been a png too.

I'll log this and look at it for the next skin update, thanks.

(Nice to see somebody actually studies the skin)

I'm also considering changing the png's to png 8 with alpha transparency (which does "work" in IE6), but that might raise even more questions..
