That's not a bad idea. Many people "fake it" like you said by using Flash and other interactive design elements in their skin.  The only downside is that the menu become static, and has to be updated, as you are aware.  But the end result is that the menu items often look better.

OK, I've just tried this.  Linked it to pages in the site.  However, when I tried to make a template out of it, and then create a child portal, the "fake" menu was still linked to pages in the Parent portal.  Absolutely NOT ideal.

Is there a way to have links be "relative" or whatever the term should be?  I want it linked to the "reports" page in the child portal, no matter what the child portal may be named, not to the "reports" page in the parent portal.

If you're doing this in a skin file, the easy thing to do would be to use the PortalAlias to create your links.  For example:

<a href="<%=Me.PortalAlias.HTTPAlias%>/Home/tabid/23/Default.aspx" />Home</a>
OR
<a href="<%=this.PortalAlias.HTTPAlias%>/Home/tabid/23/Default.aspx" />Home</a>

That aside, if your child portals are not in subdirectories, and they have the same page structure, and you're using Human Friendly URLs you should be able do this too:

<a href="/Home.aspx" />Home</a>

Do either of these scenarios match what you're trying to do?

 Will,

First, thanks for your help.

The child portals I'm creating are not in their own sub-directories, but in the "/mainsite/portals/3" for example.

Under Host Settings - Advanced - I have the Use Friendly URLs check box checked.

I tried the second method.  Still links back to the Parent portal pages of the same name.

I'm certain that I am missing something obvious, but there you go.
