 Hi,

Is there a guide that shows how in simple steps one can upgrade a site. I've seen a variety of posts that talk about FTP'ing  the contents of an upgrade zip to the server and one that mentions the subsequent need to run install.aspx. I did the FTP OK. Some posts seemed to suggest there would be an automatic upgrade kicked off but that didn't happen and when I tried to run install.aspx I just received the error "Resource cannot be found".

I'm trying to go from 04.05.03 to 05.01.04. When I log in as Host I see the link that says critical upgrades are available but hitting that downloads to my own PC which I had already done! Clearly, I'm missing something very simple but any clue would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jim

I've been lucky and always have had direct access to my servers so I've never tried upgrading via FTP but the process should be the same. Did you upload the contents of the upgrade.zip (extract it on your computer and the upload those files) or did you just ftp the .zip to your site?

 Hi Mike,

I unzipped on my PC and then FTP'd the files to my server. My ISP provides a facility to create DNN sites but at 4.8 and I would like to upgrade the site I already have.

I've done this successfully using FTP to upload files I had unzipped locally.  In my case my DNN files are in a directory called wwwroot, under the site root, and to make this work you have to set the FTP client in the next directory up (site root on the server, and whatever is the next level up on your local system) and then copy the needed folder straight over.  I use FileZilla and it does this very nicely.

For your amusement, here's the checklist I built for myself (based on the ReadMe, of course), assuming you're using the Upgrade package.  I hope this helps.

Back up site
- files
- database
Back up web.config
Put app_offline.htm file in site root
Unzip upgrade over existing site
Rename release.config to web.config
Merge localized settings to new web.config  (I use WinMerge)
- connection strings
 - machine keys
-  register app code subfolders (this is a local mod, you may not have it)
Remove app_offline.htm from site root
Browse to local site
Run wizard, note errors
