Hi,

I am trying to install DotNetNuke in a shared hosting environment. I do not want to purchase an SQL Server database however (given that the database would end up costing more than the hosting). It is a small installation and there is only going to be one portal used. For this reason I decided to opt for using SQL Server express.

However, when I try to install DotNetNuke with the option "SQL Server 2005/2005 Express (File)" option selected and leave the defaults in place i get the following error: "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"

Am I doing something wrong or could it perhaps be that the server doesn't have SQL Server Express installed?

Thanks in advance. Tomás

Tomás,

either SQL server is not installed or you are not using proper credentials. check out your hosting options and get proper credentials.

Even with sql server express, you might use sql server connection string, if the host offers you to create a blank attached database.

Thanks Sebastian.

Looks as though SQL Server wasn't installed and after contacting hosting provider they inform me that they don't offer SQL Express databases (contrary to their website information!!)

thanks again. T
