Thanks for the initial help on this but I had a couple of additional questions when I got started on the solution. I added the following to the original post but I guess it got overlooked. I know there are a lot of posts to deal with. If Sebastian or someone can follow up it would be much appreciated. I don’t want to follow procedures that aren’t valid any longer. If there is some new documentation or a new book that covers installations of DNN 5 point me to that.

I have a lot of test sites that I am going to practice on first. Some haven’t been upgraded to the latest version of 4 and a couple of them are the full source.

I have two additional questions.
  1. If I am going from some version of 4 to 5.1.4, is that OK or do I have to make sure I am going from the latest version of 4, i.e. 4.9.5.

  2. In the past I did my backups and saved my old web.config file. I then used the source zip on all my source installations and I used the install zip for everything else. I then updated the connection strings, machine keys, etc. Can I still follow this procedure or must I use the upgrade zip (DotnetNuke_Community_05.01.04_Upgrade.zip)

 Thanks for the help,

G.M.

1. I strongly suggest upgrading to DNN 4.9.x first and subsequently to 5.1.x

2. you do not need to touch web.config any longer, when upgrading from DNN 4.6.2 to any later version. simply make sure not to overwrite it when using install package. Upgrade = install package w/o web.config file and database.mdf

Thanks for the quick reply Sebastian. I’ll go ahead with the upgrades on the test sites first. Your answer to question 1 sounds like a reasonably good plan. It’s a little extra work but that’s no problem for a workaholic like me.
