This may be a dumb question:

I want to upload hundreds of videos - I don't have any images for them - so I would like to know if the following is possible (or if anyone else requires this functionality)

1) The ability to display the video as a thumbnail? I.e. the template has a stab at displaying a video and it renders an approximation of it.

2) Or, it extracts the first frame of the video and uses this as the thumbnail.

I know it may be a lot to ask for, but it would save so much time when bulk uploading...

That would be a great addition to the media and repository modules, etc.  The only code I've seen uses .NET interop with DirectShow 8.1 or 9.0 (under Windows XP) to capture a specific frame. Here's a CodeProject link that demonstrates this method: http://www.codeproject.com/directx/CapSample1.asp I haven't checked but am not sure if DirectShow is available under Windows Server, etc. (EDIT: Yes, it is supported under Windows Server 2003)

Something to look into testing during the upcoming long winter nights . . .

As the first few frames of most videos are black or a transition from black to program material, I would suggest that the frame grabbed be selectable by the user performing the upload.

Wow! Interesting. I have been working on doing just that....I took the c# CodeProject code, converted it to vb.net, created a project to grab a frame, export to jpeg (the project only exported to BMP) and.....I added code to export a series of Gifs and then the code to combine them into an Animated Gif.

My next step is the creation of a Windows Server 2003 watchfolder to automatically grab a frame from wmv files and create the thumbnail. It only works with AVI and WMV files. It will take some coding to automate the Repository to make it seamless.

I will keep this thread up on my progress. I am hoping the next version of the Repository comes out soon so I can use the new codebase.
